When I was a child the Fox River was very polluted and did not support any wildlife except small birds, squirrels and rabbits. After years of good work by the Paper Companies along the Fox, things have indeed changed and today a healthy river system now supports abundant wildlife.

Recently I was asked to do photography that would illustrate the resurgence of wildlife along the Fox River. Most of the photos were taken within just a few days and within the city limits along the Fox River.

We met in South Carolina, it was love at first sight.

She is a bit younger than me, only 20 years old, and wow what legs...

She had to come home with me!

After we got back to Wisconsin, I thought our first date here should be somewhere special.

So off we went to have a picnic at the exact center of the Northern Half of the Western Hemisphere.

Halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, and a quarter of the way around the Earth from Greenwich England.

I think my new gal looks pretty in red...

Not finding a way to the balcony from inside the church, I went outside and found an entrance to the bell tower. Inside there was a makeshift ladder leading to the balcony. Most of the rungs were cracked or broken, but up I went testing them as I climbed higher. At the top I crawled through a small doorway and took a picture of the ceiling.

When I turned to leave I saw the doorway through which I had just come, realizeing the true treasure of my climb...

The ceiling was painted Midnight Blue with Gold Stars! I knew this could be a nice shot however my lens was not long enough. I needed to be close, I needed to be on that balcony, but as you see there are no stairs...

Once inside the small old church I was amazed by what I saw. Cascading from the balcony were streamers of string covered with colored straws and tied with ribbons, gently swaying in the breeze. Then I saw the ceiling...

Your comments and feedback are important to me. When someone comments here I try my best to go to their blog and see what they have been up to. Sometimes I comment, when appropriate, sometimes not. But I do try to visit all of you.
My intent was not to create an instructional blog, however I do not mind sharing how I create these Images if it will help you. So if you have the need to know, ask away.
My work schedule may dictate how fast I answer your questions, so please be patient and I will do my best to help.
A few people have asked me about my Snowflakes and Stars post.
First, I do not use any special software other than Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I don't use HDR at this time. If you would like to see HDR, I would suggest checking out Dan Felstead, http://woodandpixels.blogspot.com/ his work is the best in my opinion.

Myth Busters.
So, M. Hassan, and VALKYRIEN,
Snowflakes and Stars was shot in one exposure. The snowflakes are Christmas ornaments hung with clear fishing line, and the stars are small Christmas tree lights. The background was a large sheet of blue textured stained glass with light coming from behind. No, it was not cold in the studio. That is only If we are shooting ice cream.
The most difficult thing about this capture was getting everything on Santa's Sleigh, without breaking the stained glass...

Before the holidays I showed you some shots of a church in Mexico.
Let us travel back and see another one even more remote.
When I looked from the camera in all directions, I could see only mountains, no village, houses, or any reason for this small church to be there, yet when I entered there was one small vigil light burning on the church altar...

I shot Snowflakes and Stars last year early on Christmas Eve, while sitting on one of the runners of Santa's sleigh, at an altitude of 50,000 feet. Every year Santa does a short test flight before leaving the North Pole to make sure all the Reindeer are up to the task. I was able to negotiate a ride so I could make this special photo. Please enjoy, and Merry Christmas to all. Ho, Ho, Ho!

Just thought you may want to see the abandoned church and graveyard from the outside. The sky looked promising that afternoon, so I climbed halfway up the mountain on an old goat path and waited for the light. The sun cleared the clouds only for a few seconds, just long enough to shoot three quick exposures with a 6x9 view camera, then it was gone. Click to view larger.

This is an 8x10 polaroid transfer of an old church in Mexico.
Because the delicate emulsion is floated off the polaroid and onto fine art paper it wrinkles and begins to take on the look of a tapestry.

I was asked by Thrivent Financial, to photograph Lutheran Churches throughout the country for their calendar. Saint Peters in New York City presented it's own challenges. Being made of gray concrete block, and sitting in the shadows of skyscrapers, the whole scene was very monochromatic. I checked inside and finding the interior was in the process of being renovated I realized my only shot was outside.
I am paid for results not excuses, so it was time to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
I came back at 6:00 p.m. and picked the best composition, put the camera on a tripod and took the first photo, the ugly gray one. I shot until 9:15 p.m. Watching the light change, I captured the sky, the reflections on the buildings, and after dusk the lights in the church and other buildings.
When I got back to my hotel, I worked till 1:00 a.m. painting seven files into the result you see here. I hope enjoy the process.

About a month ago I took on a quest to ride all 107 of the designated Rustic Roads in Wisconsin on my motorcycle in three weeks. Often leaving early in the dark, I would see a moon to the west and a hint of pre dawn pink to my east. The rides were between 100 and 800 miles in a day. The longest day was 18 hours on the bike. Some of the photos posted earlier were shot on these days on the road, and I will continue to post photos from these roads and others that I travel this summer.

You will see sunrises, flowers, old cars, barns and anything I found of interest labeled, Scenes from the Road. I hope you enjoy the Scenes as much as I did finding them.

To kick this off, just a dead flower held up to the sun.

I got up at 3:30 am to get a shot of a Lighthouse. I must be crazy... But the Community Foundation needed a photo of a lighthouse for their Annual Report, so off I went in the dark of night.

You must be there in the dark, find the best camera angle and be ready. Only a 10 minute window to shoot while the sky is dark but filled with color, and the pre dawn light warms the subject giving it shape. If the sun's rays peek above the horizon you loose. Go home and get up early again tomorrow.

I had a request for some of my woodworking, so here goes.

Some years ago, I made a Jewelry Box to give away at our Christmas family gathering. All the girls put their names in a hat, but only one was the lucky winner, so a tradition was born.

I changed them a bit year to year, these are made from Quilted and Birdseye Maple, Australian Lacewood, and Macassar Ebony.

About fourteen boxes later all the girls are happy, and my work is done.

Yamaha

Thought it was about time I show some real work again.

These are just two shots from large series I shot with Hoffman York, for Yamaha's Parts and Accessories Division. The challenge was to first find and shoot great scenes that would be a perfect environment for the different Yamaha vehicles, then to shoot the vehicles in the studio,

matching the lighting and perspective to that of the scene. The key is to make the two shots blend seamlessly so when viewed no one can tell. These, and the other shots from the series

can be seen on Yamalube containers any ware in the world.

Last night I thought it might be nice to add a sunrise shot to my blog. After all, with everything happening these days, a nice sunrise shot just might cheer some people up. I know sunrise always make me feel better.

So in the black of night I grabbed a camera fired up the motorcycle and off I went, another adventure.

As the sky lightened, I rode along hoping for a warm colorful sunrise, with magic light filtering through the low lying fog embracing the rolling hills.

But reality set in when the sun rose to greet a plain, pale blue sky with no ground fog, and yes I was in flat dairy land Wisconsin, so no rolling hills or anything else to help me find the beautiful sunrise shot that I was hoping for. I did however see some daisies, and I was enjoying a nice morning ride on the bike.

So I guess sometimes, if we can't find that perfect sunrise, we can be happy with the daisies we find by the side of the road...

A few years ago I was driving on a dirt road in the New Mexico desert, nothing but flat nothingness as far as I could see. No photo opportunities here! But, there was an interesting cloud in the sky, so I stopped the car and grabbed a camera. As I stepped into the desert my shadow stretched forward in the low light, leading me to of all things, a crop circle in the desert directly under the cloud. Now I had my photo opp!

The other night I had to do a cover shot of a Fire Truck, and to think I get payed to do this... It all started with my client asking me to scout some rural locations for the shoot. I had several places in mind and a few hours later I was e-mailing off shots from different locations.
We settled on a Grain Elevator in a small town not too far away.
The next night, with some fast location lighting we were able to come away with these four choices for the cover. And to top the evening off, across the street was a great little place where we stopped afterward for a great Friday night fish fry. May the Little Boy in me never grow up!

Winter Storms and Chauncey Gardner

While waiting for the storm to end I was reading a new post in a friend's Blog.
Donna said,
“We all know the nation's economy changed fast. It seems to be the topic of every discussion today right along with our Wisconsin weather.
I woke up Sunday morning to find that most of our snow was gone, but things sure did change quickly. The good thing about change is that it's inevitable. I know the snow will eventually be gone and Spring will soon be here. I'm hopeful for the same inevitable change for our economy.”

It reminded me of a Scene from my favorite movie, Being There.
The President was consulting with one of his advisors, Benjamin Rand,
when he paused and asked the opinion of Chauncey “The” Gardener.

President: “Mr. Gardner, do you agree with Ben, or do you think that we can
stimulate growth through temporary incentives?”

Chauncey Gardener: “ As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden.”

President: “In the garden.”

Chauncey Gardener: “Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes
spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter.
And then we get spring and summer again.”

President: “Spring and summer.”
Chauncey Gardener: “Yes.”
President: “Then fall and winter.”
Chauncey Gardener: “Yes.”

Benjamin Rand: “I think what our insightful young friend is saying is that we
welcome the inevitable seasons of nature, but we're upset by
the seasons of our economy.”

Chauncey Gardener: “Yes! There will be growth in the spring!”

President: “ Well, Mr. Gardner, I must admit that is one of the most refreshing and optimistic
statements I've heard in a very, very long time.
I admire your good, solid sense. That's precisely what we lack on Capitol Hill.”

I was at LJ Booth's home yesterday and took some pictures of him playing his new Petros Tunnel 13 guitar. We were lucky to get a preview of his newest song, about the tragic story of the Last Great American Train Robbery at Tunnel 13. What a treat, very nice indeed! The song will be featured on his new cd, now being recorded.

"A few days ago I photographed a new guitar, The Tunnel 13 for good friend, and Master Luthier, Bruce Petros.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, but the sound from this guitar and the story behind the wood is even better. The Redwood front came from timbers salvaged from Southern Pacific Railroad's Siskiyou Summit Tunnel 13 built in the 1880s. These timbers were witness to a hold up by the DeAuyremont Brothers, of the Southern Pacific Train #13 Gold Special, on October 11, 1923. This later became known as, "The Last Great American Train Robbery".

Just going for a little ride...

Two years ago I left home in Wisconsin for a little motorcycle ride...
I headed north into Canada, then east till I ran out of roads, boarded a ferry for fourteen hours and finally docked in Argentia Newfoundland. Headed north again to where the Vikings lived, again near the end of all roads and closer to Scotland than Wisconsin. I hope the slide show below gives you some idea of what an incredible place Newfoundland is. Pictures better express how wonderful and interesting this place, and it's warm frindly people really are. Nine thousand miles and four weeks later I was home again. I will go back again, and so should you...

A few years ago a friend and I cut up a white oak tree into quarter sawn lumber for my kitchen cabinets. Before the project started I found a few arts and crafts tile on ebay. So the White oak and the ebay tile were the start of my palate. Counter top and flooring choices came next...

A Year Ago Today...

A year ago today? Well, I was in sunny Florida to photograph a Pierce Fire Truck during the 50'th anniversary running of the Daytona 500. The shots I were asked to take were nice enough, but I wanted to get something special, something extra, so I asked if there was any way we could shoot the fire truck on the track about dusk. Fortunately I was with a great group of Daytona 500 Track Firefighters who were willing to go the extra mile and stay late to get the shot. Could not have gotten it done without their help! I hope they enjoy the results.
